Vegan Adventures- The Sunshine Coast

Australia is certainly becoming well known around the world as a healthy foodie destination. Hot meat pies, cans of coke and the good old vanilla slice are certainly taking a back seat with exciting new trends that have placed turmeric lattes, quinoa salads and green smoothies in the spotlight.

Whilst Melbourne and Sydney are indeed hotspots for this growing trend, with an abundance of healthy restaurants, juice bars and hipster cafes opening their doors every week, the Sunshine Coast certainly has its fair share of must-visit destinations if raw cakes, paleo breakfasts and superfood elixirs unleash excited butterflies in your tummy.

The Sunshine Coast is a mecca for health and wellness. On any day of the week you will find cross-fit groups scattered on the foreshore at dawn, cyclists claiming their bike lane on the busy coastal roads, people meditating to the rising sun or breaking out a trikonasana in the sandy dunes, and women managing heart to heart conversations whilst jogging through the various maze of walking tracks that scatter the coastline and hinterland.


Active wear is the most common (and acceptable) form of clothing. Almond and coconut milk can be found in just about any café. Farmers markets are the place to be come the weekend. Kombucha cocktails are gracing drink menus on the main street of Noosa. The popularity of this way of life demonstrates these are not mere trends- this is an exciting movement that is being eagerly embraced by people from all walks of life.

From Caloundra all the way north to Noosa and creeping into the lush Hinterland of the Sunshine Coast, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to places to enjoy a delicious nourishing meal. So get out there and explore some of these eateries whose ethics and intentions (as well as menus and meals!) will delight and inspire you.

Sunspace- Sunspace in the lovely area of Doonan is the perfect place to catch some sun as you sit amidst their organic garden and enjoy wholesome vegetarian cuisine. The specials change daily and are wholesome and often marco-biotic inspired, made with fresh produce straight from the yard. Their turmeric lattes and matcha lattes are delicious and their carrot cake is also moreish and divine. They have a small store offering organic food and gifts and often run workshops, music nights and markets. There is a small yoga studio upstairs too!

screen-shot-2016-12-03-at-9-56-03-amNew Earth Café- 100% raw, vegan and organic, this heavenly café is the place to go for your slow pressed juices, superfood smoothies, raw pizza and raw dessert fix! Run by a team of health enthusiasts, you can also pick up all your supplements and health foods needs from their colourful shelves. You are guaranteed to leave feeling truly alive and vibrant. Take a few extra treats home with you- their desserts are delicious (and guilt-free!) They are open for breakfast and lunch in the lovely town of Coolum.

Noosa Farmers Market- Held every Sunday, the Noosa Farmers Market is a must-visit. Rows of organic local produce, freshly baked bread, dips, cheese, pastries, sprouts, kombucha, coffee, pasta, tempeh- you name it, its here. Not only can you pick up your fresh goodies for the week ahead, there are dozens of food stalls that offer food from all over the world to tantilise your tastebuds. Make sure you visit the Sunflower Hotel for the best superfood smoothies on the planet that will leave you buzzing all day long.

govegan-deliGo Vegan Deli-
Over in Noosaville, the Go Vegan Deli is the perfect place to fill up an eco-friendly box of vegan delights to enjoy by the river. An open salad bar offers daily changing salads, raw tacos, raw tarts, sushi, various krauts, olives, raw crackers, dips and more for you to pick and choose from. They also have a sunny courtyard if you’re simply after a delicious turmeric chai and raw chocolate donut.

The Shack Organics- The Shack in Buderim is a popular place that offers a great range of meals that are organic, fresh and funky. They do serve meat and seafood but also have a range of lovely plant-based cuisine. The team also offer exclusive themed vegan nights once a month that are certainly worth partaking in if you get the chance! Their recent South East Asia night offered delights including fresh rice paper rolls, green papaya salad, stirfried oyster mushrooms and  pumpkin eggplant curry.

img_3716Elixaba- Vegan food has been given an exciting facelift at the Elixaba in Maroochydoore! Expect cutting edge food presented with artful flair and with unique flavor combinations. Their menu will offer something to please everyone from incredible veggie burgers to raw tacos to tasty tapas plates to share. Don’t miss their ice-cream sundaes and if youre after a drink, they also offer an eclectic range of vegan cocktails like the Colombian Cleanser with coca leaf liqueur, vodka, aloe vera juice and chlorophyll!  Open only in the evenings, this is a dinner you are sure to remember!

The Greenhouse Café- The Greenhouse Café is one of those places that you walk into and immediately feel uplifted. A bright open café that offers food made with absolute love, the menu offers something for everyone. Favourite menu items such as crunchy sourdough toast laden with creamy avocado and sprouts is offered along side daily changing specials such as abundant Nachos, Veggie Burgers and seasonal curries. Their baked offerings are fresh, tasty and free from anything artificial. This is a veggie-lovers paradise.

kunaraKunara Organic Café-Kunara Marketplace is one of the largest and best health food stores on the coast. Attached  to the large store is their beautiful sunny café that is a perfect highway stop to fuel up on veggie quinoa sushi, tasty sandwiches, enormous salad or falafel wraps, fresh wholesome salads, baked goods, raw desserts as well as organic coffee and freshly made smoothies.

Velo Project- This paleo hot-spot is the place to fuel up on all your favourite breakfast and lunch options with a twist. Try their colourful smoothie bowls, quinoa granola or range of savoury and sweet crepes. There are meat and seafood options, but also plenty of dairy-free and gluten-free selections. Their drinks menu offers the full-shebang of hipster drinks from dandelion lattes to golden milk to fresh juices, superfood smoothies and organic coffee. Bonsoy, almond milk and coconut milk options are all available.

All certified organic, this bustling marketplace is cozy and hip, the perfect place to lunge about with coffee roasted and brewed in house, stacks of paleo waffles with coconut yogurt, slow fermented sourdough bread with local free range eggs, and lunch options at Vanilla Food (one of the realtors inside Belmondo’s) that include paleo pizza, mushroom burgers and quinoa sushi. Do your weekly shopping and enjoy the abundance of tasty and wholesome options at this funky and ethical hub of goodness.

A couple of other mentions- if you’re looking for a lovely healthy picnic, Getaway Pantry do lovely hampers to order. And if you’re looking for a great juice cleanse, Noosa Cleanse also offer organic cold-pressed packs delivered to your door. The Source Bulk Foods is the best place to stock up on healthy kitchen staples and snack! There are a few spread across the Sunshine Coast, including one in Noosa.
