Orange and Date Granola

Since getting my dehydrator one of my favourite things to make has been granola. I remember when I lived in California granola was my favourite thing in the world! You can make all kinds of flavours and its a great way to get super foods, protein and healthy fats into your breakfast. It can also be used as a snack or a topping for dessert. If you don’t have a dehydrator you can try it in the oven on a low temperature for a couple of hours or until its dry. I haven’t tried it this way but I am assuming it would still be delicious! I am loving citrus at the moment so this weeks granola is full of orange with the sweetness of dates and a good kick of ginger. Perfect as the cooler mornings begin to roll in.



  • 3 cups of buckwheat soaked for 4-8 hours
  • 1 cup of sunflower seeds soaked for 2-4 hours
  • 1 cup of desiccated coconut
  • 1/4 cup of flax seeds
  • 1/4 cup of raisons
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of ginger
  • 1 banana chopped
  • 1 apple chopped
  • 1/4 orange (including peel- make sure its organic!)
  • 1 cup of soft dates (soak in warm water if they are hard!)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla

After you have soaked the buckwheat and sunflower seeds, rinse them well in water and strain. Place them in a large bowl and add the coconut, flax seeds and raisons.

In your blender, add all the other ingredients and blend until the mixture comes together but still retains some texture. I had to add some water to help it blend at first so feel free to add water or orange juice.

Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and mix everything really well by hand.

Spread the mixture out evenly over 3-4 dehydrator trays with the non stick sheets on.

Dehydrate for 12-16 hours until the granola is fully dry and crunchy. If you like your granola a little softer and chewier you can take it out sooner.

This will store in an airtight container for a few weeks.

Its delicious with nut milk or on top of a smoothie, or just as it is!
